ExeterA University and Cathedral city, Exeter is steeped in history. The Romans developed an existing settlement in about AD50 when they built the impressive defensive walls that still surround much of the city. Later in 1068, William the Conqueror ordered the building of the castle after he sacked the town. There is evidence of virtually every period of architecture of the last 2000 years in this fascinating city. The twin-towered cathedral is one of the most impressive in the country having been carefully restored following bomb damage during the Second World War. Also interesting are the town’s underground passageways which used to provide the city’s water supply. Shopping is a pleasant experience under the decorated gables of the Tudor shops. The surrounding Devon countryside is breathtaking.
