To east of Nottingham. Market and fair town since 1251. It became the centre of a coal mining area. In the church is a fine stone screen and monument of a Knight in armour, probably Nickolas de Cantelupe, first Lord of Ilkeston, who died about 1290. Sulphur waters were drunk here. Local museum.
