Chesterfield Once known as Cestrefield by the Anglo Saxons, this ancient and busy industrial town is well known for its 14th century landmark, the crooked 69 metre spire of Saint Mary and All Saints Chur George Stephenson, railroad pioneer and inventor of the coal miner’s safety lamp lived at Tapton House in the latter days of his life, when he supervised the building of a railway through the town. Stephenson Hall and the wonderful church window at Trinity Church where he is buried are memorials to his great and groundbreaking achievements. Chesterfield has a variety of leisure facilities, which range from the Pomegranate Theatre, the Queens Park Sports Centre, and the Derbyshire County Cricket Club can often be seen playing on Queens Park.
