Durham Durham

Durham is a beautiful town crowned by its majestic cathedral which rises above the city on a hill looped by the River Wear. The cathedral, which took 300 years to build, stands on the site of the White Church where St Cuthbert's bones are kept, and in the Galilee Chapel is the tomb of the Venerable Bede. Also on this high rock stands the castle. Originally built by William the Conqueror, it eventually became the University, founded in 1646 by Oliver Cromwell.

The centre of the city is around Market Place, where many of Durham’s shops can be found. The river’s winding course has resulted in some attractive bridges and scenic walks around the city, where a variety of interesting architecture can be seen. To learn more about Durham’s past, visit the Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology, which displays finds from the local area.
