Historically a great industrial town on the Skerne with locomotive works and wool mills. The Stockton and Darlington railway was the first passenger line to be worked by locomotive engines. Stephenson's railway engine, the Locomotion" can be seen in a museum. In the church of St. Cuthbert is preserved the stone gallery of the rood-screen.
