Antrim - An historic town on the shore of Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the British Isles, occupying 100,000 acres. Fine old castle with Round Tower is nearly 100 feet high and 50 feet round, and has a cross with circle in relief in the lintel of the door.

Ballycastle - A favourite holiday resort with sporting attractions and fine views of the mountains of Donegal, the Giant's Causeway and the coast of Scotland. There are ruins of a 18th century Friary, the burial ground of the Earls of Antrim, and also of Dunanynie Castle, the first home of the McDonnells golf.

Ballyclare - Market town to the north of Belfast, in a hilly setting. It is located in the Valley of the Six Mile Water River. It has a spacious square and excellent shopping facilities.

Ballymoney - A linen and agricultural centre on the road between Ballymena and Coleraine. Nearby is the family home of William McKinley, 25th President of the United States.

Bushmills - An attractive town near the Giant's Causeway and DuDluce Castle.

Carrickfergus - An ancient town on Belfast Lough with a Norman castle built by de Courcy, used as an armoury until thirty years ago and now restored. From the dungeon Con O'Neill of Clandeboye escaped by ropes hidden in a cheese sent to him by his wife. In St. Nicholas' Church is a monument to Sir Arthur Chichester, the founder of Belfast. Jonathan Swift, who was in charge of the now ruined church outside the town, collected a congregation by rolling stones on the sea shore until enough people gathered to see what was happening. Until 1784 this was the port for Belfast.

Crumlin - Short distance from eastern shore of Lough Neagh. Belfast International Airport (Tourist Information 01849 422888) is at Aldergrove to the north of Crumlin.

Larne - A pleasant small seaside resort. The landing-place from Stranraer the shortest sea-passage between Great Britain and Ireland. There are remains of a 13th century castle built by the Bissett family at Olderfleet.

Newtownabbey town guide.

Portrush - A delightful seaport resort, one of the most popular in Ireland, partly owing to its nearness to Dunluce Castle and the Giant's Causeway. It is built on the peninsula of Ramore Head. There is a fine harbour and excellent golf courses.
