Stockton-on-Tees is an industrial town which was once devoted to ship-building and iron work. It is famous for receiving the first passenger steam train, which arrived from Darlington on 27 September 1825. The first rail for the track was laid in 1822, and George Stephenson manned the first trip himself. This and other aspects of the area’s history are commemorated at the Green Dragon Museum.

If you fancy a night out, Stockton-on-Tees has a lot to offer. You could listen to local musicians at a gig or take in a film at the Arc Centre. There are lots of other events too, and if you come at the right time of year, you can enjoy the International Festival. The festival has a host of exciting events spanning a number of days, and is a great way to experience the arts.
