Widnes

A large industrial town on Cheshire's north bank of the Mersey. Town contained chemical, paint, soap, oil and grease works. Also copper-smelting and iron founding. Here in 1845 was built the first railway, canal and dock complex. Now there is an exhibition, The Halton Chemical Industry Museum, which tells the story of how this area, including Runcorn across the Mersey, developed.
