Knutsford Six miles from Manchester. The original of Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford. A pleasant Georgian town with a 16th century Grammar School and a Theological College that was formerly a prison. Mrs. Gaskell's house and grave can still be seen. Curiously attractive Italianate houses. Nearby attractions are Tatton Park, 18th century Mansion with Parkland and lake and at Wilmslow, Quarry Bank Mill.
