Windsor Windsor as it is now grew up from the fortification built by William the Conqueror, which today, following many alterations, is known as Windsor Castle. Old Windsor, a few miles away, was the original village, first called Windlesora, but with the building of the castle, growth shifted to the new setting. This outstanding castle today provides a focus for the many visitors to the town, who are eager to experience England’s history first hand. Modern Windsor is very busy but also very attractive. The shops are a mixture of high street names and quaint boutiques, and the tourist trade is well catered for. Just below the castle on the other side of the River Thames are the Tudor brick buildings of Eton College, another famous site in the town. Stretching away from Windsor, and linked to the castle by the 2.5 mile Long Walk is the magnificent Great Park – a combination of sweeping lawns and ancient woods. One of the most recent additions to the local attractions has to be Legoland. Blending the modern with the traditional, it offers a combination of rides and displays that is sure to be a hit with visitors of all ages.
