Welcome to Bedford's Townpage
Situated on the banks of the River Ouse, Bedford is supposed to have been named after the 8th century Saxon Chief Beda. The town thrived across the centuries with a Norman castle being built and subsequently destroyed. John Bunyan, author ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ was born in the nearby village of Elstow in 1628 – there is a bronze statue of him on Bedford’s St Peter’s Green.A stroll around the town reveals riverside walks and attractive parks and gardens, as well as museums and galleries. Further afield, there are exotic animals and more to be seen at Woburn Safari Park. If you prefer a more tranquil setting however, why not visit the Swiss Garden, an intricate and ornamental garden on the edge of the Shuttleworth Collection - which holds an extensive display of aeroplanes and cars.
